Forever Traveling

Greetings from Mount Gambier

A Hidden Gem of South Australia’s Natural Wonders

Embarking on a journey of discovery often leads us to unexpected destinations, each with its own allure and intrigue. During our travel through the QLD outback we met another traveler from Mount Gambier and decided to visit her a year later once she was back in her hometown. We never really thought about driving down this way as we originally wanted to put as much distance between us and Melbourne (lock-down post traumatic syndrome I guess …). Coming down there was one of the most pleasant surprise along our journey through South Australia.

Of course we had done a bit of research before heading down that way from Adelaide, we were aware of the blue lakes but we weren’t prepared for the beauty of the scenery !

Nestled amidst lush forests and picturesque landscapes, the Blue Lake stands as a testament to the unspoiled beauty of nature. Its crystal-clear waters, reflecting the azure sky above, create a serene oasis that beckons travelers from far and wide.

As we approached the tranquil shores of the Blue Lake, we were immediately struck by its pristine beauty. Surrounded by verdant foliage and embraced by the gentle rustle of leaves, it provided a sanctuary away from the chaos of everyday life.

For those seeking adventure, the Blue Lake offers a plethora of activities, from swimming and kayaking to hiking along its scenic trails. Each moment spent in its embrace is a reminder of the restorative power of nature, leaving visitors feeling rejuvenated and inspired. We spend our first day just setting camp in the caravan park close by the lakes and went for a wander camera in hand.

The next day we decided to go and explore a little more this fascinating land holes spread all around Mount Gambier. First stop in the heart of a bustling city center where lies an urban marvel that defies explanation: “The Hole.” This enigmatic phenomenon, shrouded in mystery and intrigue, draws visitors with its inexplicable presence and otherworldly allure.

Approaching The Hole, we were met with a scene unlike any other. A vast chasm, seemingly bottomless, stretched out before us, captivating onlookers with its sheer impossibility. Speculation abounded as to its origins and purpose, yet no definitive answers could be found.

Despite its urban setting, The Hole serves as a reminder of the boundless wonders that lie just beneath the surface of everyday life. It sparks curiosity and ignites the imagination, inviting visitors to contemplate the mysteries of the universe and embrace the unknown.

Our second stop was the very “insta-famous” Garden Hole a magical scene for the human eye. Tucked away in a quaint corner of the city, this enchanting oasis beckoned with its lush foliage and colorful blooms, providing a welcome contrast to the surrounding concrete jungle.

Stepping into the Garden Hole felt like entering another world entirely. Vibrant flowers bloomed in every hue imaginable, while winding paths led us on a whimsical journey through its verdant landscape. It was a place of quiet beauty and unexpected delights, offering a tranquil retreat from the chaos of urban life.

Our journey through the Blue Lake, The Hole, and the Garden Hole reminded us of the boundless wonders that await those willing to venture off the beaten path. Whether seeking the tranquility of nature or the excitement of urban discovery, there are hidden treasures to be found around every corner.

As we were heading toward Carpenter Rocks, our next destination, we were a little sad to leave this oasis of geological mysteries. We would absolutely recommend visiting this laid back town and spend at least a few days exploring the natural beauty and activities it offers.

Forever traveling, Chris & Claire.
